A recent study by the Japan Private Railway Association (JPRA) found that coughing and sneezing are the biggest annoyances for train passengers. The survey included responses from 5,314 people who shared their thoughts on behaviour and manners while using trains and waiting at stations.

The results showed that “coughing and sneezing without consideration for others” was the main issue, which may be a result of the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. A spokesperson from the JPRA explained that the pandemic has made people more aware of the need to be considerate towards others, especially in close spaces like trains.

Since 1999, the JPRA has asked passengers about their feelings on train manners to encourage better behavior. The survey showed that over half of the respondents, about 50.5 percent, find coughing and sneezing the most annoying.

Other complaints included people stretching their legs too far, not making space for others to sit, and having loud conversations. The JPRA also noted that strong smells from perfumes or laundry products and poor manners when boarding or exiting the train, such as blocking the doors, were also common irritations.

Interestingly, the number of train passengers in Japan has increased, partly because more tourists are visiting the country. This growth in riders highlights the importance of maintaining good manners and consideration for others. The JPRA hopes that by sharing these findings, they can remind people to be more mindful of their behavior, which can create a more pleasant experience for everyone on the train.
